Rock am Ring, Glastonbury and Sónar are not the only festivals around. A selection of smaller ones that are at least as good.
Unknown highs
No one knows the bands – or the location beforehand. That’s the magic of Meadows in the Mountains, a hippy stronghold in Bulgaria that will reverberate with soul, techno and electronic pop from June 10 through 13.
Gigs and ghosts
The line-up alone – mainly indie bands – is worth going for, but Castlepalooza has a unique supporting program (fortune tellers, comedians, burlesque) and takes place in a haunted Irish castle July 1 through 3.
Polar pop
Some 5000 rock and pop fans attend this festival on two remote islands in Træna, northern Norway, even though the crossing takes six hours. Most spectacular venue: a cathedral cave. July 7 through 10
