The Roosevelt Island Tramway, an aerial tramway that connects the largely car-free district of Roosevelt Island with Manhattan, was supposed to be a temporary line until the subway under the East River was completed. Work on the subway was delayed and New Yorkers loved the tram so much that they refused to give it up – much to the delight of many tourists.
French traditionalist Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) is famous for his paintings, but his sketches are rarely seen. Now Kunstmuseum Basel is remedying that situation with a show, The Hidden Cézanne, which runs through Sept. 24 (photo: “Bathers”).
Scotland celebrates The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in front of Edinburgh Castle from August 4 through 26. At the country’s biggest music festival, started in 1950, military bands display their talents – as well as many a fine leg beneath a kilt.
