It doesn’t always have to be high-end apartments or a uniform office tower: The Park Fiction project is a residents’ and artists’ initiative on Hamburg’s waterfront
Every night in the summer, people party here above the harbor, but wintry palm trees have a whimsical charm of their own. When the City of Hamburg decided to build on prime riverfront property in 1994, a storm of public opposition ensued.
What local residents demanded instead was a public green area with an element of art. They developed the park concept, complete with a grass-covered “flying carpet.” Some ten years later, Park Fiction became reality and has been a local hot spot ever since.
