“We can keep a maximum of 215 000 individual spare parts in stock in our new small parts warehouse. Screws, bolts, gaskets – up to a certain size you’ll find practically everything needed for aircraft overhaul and repairs here. My job is to process orders placed by my colleagues at Lufthansa Technik. I used to get around the long aisles in the warehouse in a little truck, picking items manually. Since summer 2015, we have had a new, automated warehouse. It works like a gigantic vending machine for snacks and drinks and holds 24 000 containers spread over 700 square meters. When I enter the part number – which is like an article code – into the system, one of 19 robots fetches the right container and brings it to me. All I have to do is check whether it’s the correct part number and then I move on to the next order.”
