Don’t look down!

In Wulingyuan Scenic Area in China’s Hunan Province, the world’s tallest outdoor elevator hurtles you skywards at 3.5 meters per second. The view from the top is dizzyingly good.

You enter the glass cubicle underground. Then, the Bailong Elevator (literally: Hundred Dragon Elevator), shoots you roughly 330 meters into the sky. Guiness World Records has it listed as the tallest outdoor elevator in the world. From the platform, you look out over a magical landscape of giant sandstone pillars, caves, canyons and waterfalls. A true filmscape, the director James Cameron evidently thought, because he used this UNESCO World Heritage site as the inspiration for his successful movie Avatar.
