“I’m training a robot that’s designed to test cockpit panel controls. It will operate fully automatically later on, but first, I have to demonstrate the procedure to it by remote control: I guide the robot’s arm to bring its gripper to a halt at a switch, and save that position. Then I repeat the procedure for all the other switches. When I’ve done that, the robot does an automatic test run and I perform any necessary adjustments afterwards. I programmed the robot before getting started, so it already knows exactly how to operate the various pushbuttons and toggle switches. The readings they display indicate that an element is damaged. Until now, cockpit panels were always tested manually. We developed the robot test procedure to relieve staff of this monotonous job. We will be introducing it gradually over the course of the year – initially for selected Airbus A320, Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 panels.”
