Berlin – One city, two faces
- ILLUSTRATION CRISTÓBAL SCHMAL
Poor, but sexy? That’s history. Berlin is home to more opulence and high-end style than it has been in a long time. But even without (much) money, it’s still possible to have a wonderful time in the German capital. We show you both sides.

Be a star
If you like hogging the limelight and can carry a tune, this is for you: Every Sunday, the amphitheater in Mauerpark becomes a weird and wonderful karaoke stage.

Bargain tables
It costs nothing to look and there’s plenty to buy if you’re on a budget, so make sure to check out the Flowmarkt flea market in Neukölln.

Dance the night away
Clärchen’s Ballhaus hosts free tango, salsa and swing evenings. Plus, it’s where scenes from Inglourious Basterds and Stauffenberg were filmed.

Fly with the wind
Where but in Berlin can you landsail in the middle of a city? The runway at former Tempelhof Airport is just perfect for this sport.

Musical intermezzo
Well-known jazz pianists, singer-songwriters and opera singers regularly give short concerts at Dussmann Culture Department Store for free.

City beaches
Wannsee bathing beach charges 5.50 euros’ admission, but the Alter Hof bathing area on the banks of the Lower Havel river is less crowded and costs nothing at all.

Brilliant
Jewelry for the price of a mid-sized car: Georg Hornemann, probably Germany’s most exclusive jeweler, is based near swanky Ku’damm avenue.

Sausage supreme
At Kollwitzplatz market, you pay just 15 euros for curry sausage sprinkled with gold leaf, fries with truffle mayonnaise and champagne.

Big spender
If you want to lighten your wallet, visit a luxury mall like Quartier 206 or check out the very trendy Bikini Berlin concept mall.

Create a scent
A course for individualists: Indulge yourself while you’re in Berlin and develop your own scent for 145 euros at Frau Tonis Parfüm.

Exclusive
Only members (and their guests!) are admitted to the China Club in the Adlon Palais. The fee to join Germany’s most exclusive club: 10 000 euros.

Top Dollar Tour
See the Alex Tower, the Victory Column and Brandenburg Gate in a stretch limousine for 666 euros – chauffeur and guide included.
