“To me, playing the piano is like breathing”, says Ólafsson, 35, who grew up in modest circumstances in Reykjavík, Iceland. When his grandfather died, Ólafsson’s parents spent his legacy on a Steinway piano rather than an apartment – a wise decision. On August 11, the audience at the Rheingau Musik Festival in Germany, one of Europe’s principal cultural events, will be able to hear Ólafsson perform in his famously colorful, experimental style. Lufthansa Magazin peeked into the pianist’s bag at Tegel Airport in Berlin.
