New Year’s Eve
Celebrating New Year’s Eve on Times Square is a great experience, of course, but Cape Town, Reykjavík and the Bahamas have interesting ways of ringing in the New Year, too.
Elaborate masks, noisy beats, brilliant costumes: On the Bahamas, the new year kicks off Caribbean style with the Junkanoo carnival street parade.
Reykjavík celebrates New Year’s Eve with huge bonfires. Fireworks and occasionally the Northern Lights illuminate the sky. Early next morning, instead of going to bed, you can recover from your hangover in the steaming waters of a geyser-fed thermal pool.
Although half of Cape Town traditionally heads to the New Year’s party on Victoria and Albert Waterfront, the best view of the fireworks is from Table Mountain. On January 2, more than 10 000 people take part in the grand finale, the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Parade.
