CULTURE CLASH
Tango, salsa and swing are as conventional as the waltz these days – but once upon a time, they were considered highly provocative. That exotic role now falls to other dances.
Wolosso
Gyrating hips and swinging butts: West Africa’s version of “dirty dancing” has moral apostles blaming Western decadence,
but it’s actually (also) based on tribal dances.
Attan
The national dance of Afghanistan, it was nevertheless banned by the Taliban: You dance in a circle and keep following the steps as the music gets faster and faster. If you make a mistake, you’re out.
Dab Dance
This style emerged from Atlanta’s hip-hop scene, and last year became a popular triumphal gesture among athletes. The main move: Stretch one arm and bury your head in the elbow of the other arm.
